Ran the motor out of oil - Ouch...

So Saturday I am loading up to meet my brother at our creek house, and I get a call from him - the day before, he was fishing and ran out of oil. Motor is a 96 OMC / Johnson 60 hp. Seized the motor. He got back to the house, got the motor spinning again, got some oil, and it fired right up. The rest of the weekend, we burned a lot of gas - fishing, pulling skiers /toober/ joy-riding. Motor is still running strong, will still spin 5800 with the JP all the way down, and has plenty of power to get adults up on skis, and in fishing trim, will still get up on plane in about one to 1.5 boat lengths.

The maybe bad - the motor definitely sounds different, a bit like an older diesel. As the weekend went on, it smoothed out a bit, but still sounds a bit off.

So the question - are we now sitting on a time bomb? What will the point of failure be? Or will we probably get another many years out of this motor? I think my brother and I are of like mind - we will not replace till we have to (blow it up), but we would like it to last a bit longer, if we can.

Anyone been down this road?
