Texas City Dike help/New to saltwater

HI all new to the forum and saltwater. I was just wondering if any one had some advice on catching speckled trout at the Dike? I have taken my 12 and 9 year old a few times but only caught a few small sand trout and croker. For bait we have moslty been using dead shrimp and what ever we catch in the cast net on bottom rig. We usally fish the accessible fishing peir. I would appreciate any advice. We are in league city so if anyone has another good spot to go?
