I have been fishing salt water fishing for 3 years now mostly in Matagorda so new waters for me. I was excited and nervous not knowing where I was going. Anyways Thursday trip started off on the wrong foot and forgot a few things at home and had to go back home once we already left to get last minute supplies in town before we set out. Then had a blow out on the boat trailer on the way and was already behind schedule. Luckily some guys that were already driving for 24 hours heading home to corpus Christi from Iowa I believe stopped and helped( thanks a million if y'all are 2coolers). After that we set off to finish our drive.Got to my cousins house in key allegro around 8 hanged out a bit and started to get ready for the morning. We went to Aransas pass in the a.m. And launched from fin and feather. We just putted around hog island area didn't have much luck there called it a day around 2. went to go get my tire fixed. Went back to the house fished from the dock and caught several small trout. Lots of bait everywhere. But no keepers.
That night put the boat in and trolled around fishing lights caught some small trout right at the edge of lights. Then I noticed a few lights down the canal some big shadows swimming in and out of light trolled down there and there they were big ole out of slot reds. I had a grin ear to ear because I knew I most likely was going to catch one if I could get my bait in the right spot at the right time .I just bought a light for my boat to put on it at night to give me a little light for trolling the canals at night and it had a uv light to charge lures. So I started to dig in the ole tackle box and found a bag of glow in the dark chicken boys charged that bad boy up and sight casted to the fish he hit it several times but didn't take it. finally he did take it and it was on. What a fight I had.
He went 31 but was fat as a pig
This was my first out of slot red I been waiting for this moment for 3 years now lol I'm possibly tossing around the idea of a replica. Because this fish was very special to me. Nothing beats a big ole red on the end of your line.
After calming down from all the adrenaline we Called it a night and went to bed so we would be ready for our wade fishing trip in the morning. On Saturday morning we waded mud island area. Everyone in my group was wading almost chest deep catching a lot of undersized trout. I decided to go up shallow and saw a pod of reds casted over pulled lure into pod and bam he took it. I got it on gopro along with some Dolphins that were circling me and my girlfriend maybe 10ft away they were very friendly but I'm sure they just wanted my red or trout on the stringer. I thought I had it all on gopro until I got back to the house and for some reason my sd card failed on me. I was pretty bummed but oooooo well maybe next time.
ended up with one red and 3 trout for the day. Red went 23 and trout were 16 -18. Went home rested up because I knew what I was doing tonight and that was going after big reds in lights. Did the same thing the night before. Went out and did the same thing same place same set of lights. Except they didn't want my glow in the dark chicken boys they would bite the chicken boy but spit it real fast not giving enough time to set the hook. So had to switch to gulp. Which paid off . Girlfriend had several hook ups but got broke off several times. She finally landed this big boy he went 33.
. you can see she was happy. Went to bed after all that was done.went out to mud island and scratched a big ole goose egg on Sunday and headed home. all in all great weekend wasnt expecting the over sized reds in the lights what a thrill it was. Hope to have to some more reports coming in September and October when I'll get to go again. Tight lines my friends.
