A buddy and I had been talking for years about doing a trip for Blue Marlin. January, we said, this is it. We went to Bermuda last week and fished for two days. The weather was rough earlier in the week and improved the longer we were there. I had never bill fished before, so I had to learn some things, # of bites per day expectations....stuff like that.
Day 1- Fished from 8:25am to 4pm. 1 bite, no fish ( A concurrent tournament was going on, out of 30 boats- 9 Blues and 6 whites were caught)
Day 2- around 9 and 9:30 we think we had hits by Whites, but no hookups. About 11, we had a no doubt bite and hook up with a Blue. I was in the seat first and could see him jumping as he was taking off VERY EXCITING! Took about 20 minutes or so to get him in. My first billfish, BLUE MARLIN 250# per the captain. I got some pics with my cell phone. and my friend didn't get great footage with the Go-Pro. We were pumped.
It wasn't 30 minutes after all the lines were back out that we got another hit. My buddy gets in the chair and fights his Blue in. 100#. While he was fighting the fish, I got some great Go-Pro footage. Our goal was to get some under water footage. As I leaned over the boat, my phone fell out of my shirt pocket :headknock
We had a monster blue come in later and take one of the teasers, but not a bait. A little later we had another blue come in and hit a couple baits, and I even saw it hit the bait one last time. He fought and shook the hook pretty quick. Great day on the water. Great time. Great place.
Overall, the captain said that the bite has been off some this year compared to last year.
