Through the years, some of the best nights of flounder gigging I have ever had were immediately after strong late afternoon/evening thunderstorms. The "calm after the storm" makes for ideal gigging conditions, and the fish are usually very eager to head shallow to feed after staying deeper during the afternoon storms. Tonight was no exception, with lots of big flounder heading shallow as soon as the rain quit and wind calmed down. With heavy rain and lightning until 8pm tonight, plus 3" of rain today, I had a hard time convincing my customers that the gigging would be good. After pleading with them, they decided to go, and they got to experience a rare night of perfect gigging conditions.

After 12 days of vacation, I got back on the water tonight. I had the Christine K. group of 6 onboard. After keeping an eye on strong thunderstorms all afternoon and evening, we left the dock a little late, just as rain ended around 8pm. Conditions were ideal, with light North wind, cool temps, and normal tide levels. On our first stop we encountered a bunch of freshwater runoff from today's storms, and found only scattered pockets of clear water. After 1 hour we only had 3 fish in the boat, and we made a move looking for better action. At our next stop we found perfect clear water and flounder everywhere. We gigged the remaining 27 fish for our limit here in 1 hour, working a small 300 yard stretch of shoreline back and forth as new fish moved in with every pass. The pace was incredible, and the fish were easy to spot holding over hard sand bottom. We ended with a 30 flounder limit by 10:45pm, and the average size of the fish was 18", with 9 fish over 20".
