... on the big island of Hawaii.

I've been glancing at the reports from time-to-time and imagining how horrible it must be to realize your town/home is smack dab in the way. Apparently, since it happens ever so often, there's nothing that can be done. But, it seems to this flat land hillbilly that it could be diverted to follow a different path. Although lava is molten rock, heated to thousands of degrees, it flows downhill sorta like water, following the path of least resistance. It would seem that digging trenches or pilling up a bunch of the big concrete freeway dividers in front of the flow would divert it.
Still, if it were that easy, surely they would have already tried it. Maybe they have and found out it didn't work. Maybe there are no options, outside of a real good insurance policy.
