Kill Switch or Ignition?

Hi 2Coolers

I have a 120 Johnson 87 Model with OMC controls. A little while ago it left me 12miles from home in West Bay, i eventually got a tow back to the boat ramp, was a horrible day ;-(

Anywho, i did some tests an in my infinite wisdom with little technical knowledge i replaced the CDI pack and while i was at it, spark plugs, some were fouled. Started her up and nothing happened, same issue. I then removed the black and yellow kill switch wire going to the CDI, low and behold it started right up. I then extended the wire to my deck with an on/off switch. Its in the off position when i start and drive, when i stop i need to put the button in the off position to kill the engine. Turning the engine key to the off position does nothing, only the on/off switch i installed inline on the kill switch going to the CDI turns the engine off.

This is an interim measure leaving me with no safety for me or the occupants, should i fall off while moving the boat wont stop, so i want to get this fixed. Given the info above, would you say this is a faulty kill switch or does the ignition have something to do with it?

Thanks
