Looking for advice

I understand étiquette, I have fished off-shore before but on an amateur level with friends, and I have been "hooked" ever since my first trips about 3 years ago... but... I just never seem to get full satisfaction from my trips over the last year and I am having a hard time learning the tricks of the trade.

My friends and I go about ~30 miles out to rigs from Freeport and Galveston, we also fish the jetties, and some bay & inland spots that aren't too shallow. We use a 24' bay boat for both off and inshore, and used to use a 35' cabin fisher to go further out, but recently I got a 225cc Sea Hunt Triton and it does it all (for my interest).

The problem comes when I go out and come back empty but see (lots) of other hauling in the meat, or we go hit the rigs and have the same results with only the occasional tight lines. We've had good trips where each of the 5 kids got to haul in nice Kings when trolling rigs, but that was the extent of our haul.

So I guess the question is, what do I need to do to get good or better than we have been able to achieve? We use the bait and tackle recommended for the trips we take (Ribbon fish to troll for King, shrimp for Red and Trout, Piggy Perch for Snapper or other seasonal gamefish off shore, etc), but just have not had the kind of results (or sometimes no results) with our trips and it gets frustrating.

I've had really bad luck with Trout, Reds, Dorado, Snapper, Ling, or just about anything other than Kings (we do actually catch some King most of the time). My friends who have fished a lot longer than me are baffled by our poor results too. Sometimes it's hard to pay that fuel bill when there's nothing in the ice chest...

Being out on the water is awesome, and I obviously enjoy that part of fishing, but I just want to get better at the "catching" part of things! :fish:
