Steady Coastal Action

Bay Flats Lodge on San Antonio Bay

The minor cool front we received a few days ago cooled the air a bit, but the fishing has remained hot. Anglers fishing out of the boat with live bait continue to produce steady redfish catches, some of which have been a tad oversized. A lot of these Reds are being taken extremely early in the morning on croaker or live shrimp. Dead baits like cut-mullet, dead shrimp, and even skipjack have also accounted for their fair share of redfish over the past few days. Shallow water over mud and grass has become the ticket for recent redfish success, and anglers probably shouldn’t anticipate this pattern changing too terribly much until such time that we undergo another adjustment in our current weather conditions.

Speckled trout have become “spotty” as of late (no pun intended), at least for those who have been offering live croaker from the boat on a regular basis. However, those who have ventured over the side of the boat to wade with live bait have done much better as a result. And the few who have gambled on tossing artificial baits have surprised themselves with some good numbers of some very impressive fish. While sandy shorelines with occasional shell have given up some of the bigger fish, a lot of the many back lakes that are filled with a combination of sand, mud, and grass have also produced some “hogs” this month.

Recently, winds have subsided a bit, and a lot of anglers haven’t had to contend with the southerly-influenced winds that normally dominate the heat of summer. And although we haven’t had much wind the past couple days, anglers should not get use to calm mornings each day. We will still be in for some strong winds this month and next, and when they come, don’t be afraid to fish on those days. In fact, some of the best trout results have come this month on top water lures in very windy conditions and very stained water. Remember, you never know until you go. Good luck…and keep grindin’.

Synopsis:
Weak surface high pressure that has settled along the upper Texas coast will result in a weak easterly flow across the middle Texas coast tonight. A weak southeast wind is expected to develop Friday. Drier air moving into the waters will preclude rain chances tonight through Saturday. Moisture will gradually increase Sunday through Tuesday. An upper level disturbance over the coastal waters into southeast Texas will interact with this higher moisture to provide a chance for showers and thunderstorms Sunday though Tuesday night. A weak onshore flow will prevail through early next week as well.
Coastal Water Temperature:
Rockport 88.0 degrees
Port Aransas 86.0 degrees
