Trapperjon, and BBJim, went with me the last couple of days for some recreational fishing for striped bass. trapperjon and I have been working hard and needed some fun fishing to relax a little.
Nothing like top water striped bass to relax with, lol!
Yesterday BBJim and I put the hurt on them with top water baits, a large silver spoon, and a one ounce chrome to blue trap.
Threw the long rod with a Bullard's Best Striper Kandy fly for some good size stripers way up there too.
The real action was up close and personnel though with Zara Spooks and such, just a good cast away on 6' and 7' tackle.
We took home a limit of 20 to 23 inch striped bass, caught about 35 between us by 9:00 and went in before it got too hot. Some were as big as 9 pounds, many very fat big fish in the tail race now.
Today trapperjon and I went and had a banner day on short rod top waters, long rod cork/fly, short rod slab spoons, rattle traps, the kitchen sink, a spark plug with hooks on it would have worked if raced across the top. Trapperjon even caught two big ones on the same top water lure, there was some water trashing going on!
Late in the morning, about 8:30 tragedy struck in the form of a hook in my thumb that required ER intervention. The same lure trapperjon caught two at a time on caught me good in the meat of my left thumb.
By then we had caught endless catch and release striped bass up to 28".
It happened because I let the net get ratty and even had the replacement net to put on, just being lazy not doing it sooner I guess.
I was gripping the sides of the net to the frame and lifting the beast out for Jon while he lifted with his rod.
All it took was one good shake of it's head before the hook was in my thumb, being that close to the fish. Until trapperjon could get there and release the fish, a good 26" striped bass, it was shaking it's head and thrashing the hook all in my thumb.
Carelessness for sure.
Learn from every mistake and believe me the net will be replaced in the morning, by trapperjon, my hand is too sore.
We are booked up with either trips or family obligations until September 4th. The fishing should just get better with cooler temps around the corner and a reduction of the flow behind the dam should improve fishing on both sides.
See you on the water.
