Decompression deep water catfish

I have seen some videos where people are catching trophy blues from deep water and they are talking about letting the catfish decompress before release. I also fished with a guide in January where I landed a 35lb Blue and the guide inserted a wooden rod down his mouth and "burped" him before release. Can anyone give me information about the correct way to do this?
