Trolling motor shaft length?

Will a 45" shaft, foot controlled, trolling motor work on a boat with 24" sides?

I bought the 45" trolling motor when the original plans were 21" sides. Now that we are going to 24" sides I'm wondering if I should swap it out for the 52" shaft. This is a minnkota 80lb Fortrex.
