Incandescent Light Bulb Longevity

I stumbled across this observation about the longevity of my incandescent lights in our old ceiling fan. I installed a timing between the fan and the light switch and now the bulb appears to last longer. I suspect the switch may filter the surge when the bulb initially comes on.
