Unfinished service question

So here is the question. Sunday I hired a lot clear guy to clear some cedar but mainly to clean up what I already had cut. He said he would start Tuesday as he would get a few hands to help and would call me an hour before job was complete so I could see his work and to pay him. (He felt it was a 1/2 to full day job)I didnt hear from him by 3:30 so i drove to my property and arrived around 4:30pm. No one could be found. Only a quarter of work was completed. I found some gloves and water bottles but no helpers. I didnt think much about it and just figured they got tired and went home and would start back today. Well went back tonight and nothing else have been completed.



I haven't paid guy and he hasn't contacted me. Not sure what to do. Do I call him or just take it as he quit? Thats what im thinking with the way they left the area. Only other thought is a worker got hurt but then again I would have thought I would have been contacted.
