So I have been considering building my own rods. Looks like a very fun hobby. Start up cost is not a big deal to me since all hobbies seem to hit your pocket book hard in the beginning.
I went to FTU today to browse around and look at things. I picked up some blanks and some said made in china. These were around 55 to70 bucks each. Picked up a st croix blank that was 200. Okay...I know there are quality differences and where it is made and probably many other variables.
What I don't get is if you drop say $70 on a blank and then your guides and components you are going to be around $120.....just guessing. How will that be much different than a rod off the shelf for $120-$150 price range. Trying to justify how I can build a better rod than I can purchase for roughly the same cost with no "free" time used. And as cheap as I am, I really want to build a better quality rod for myself cheaper than I can buy.
