Howdy gang-
A several years ago, my wife bought me an old 1448 johnboat. It was not really "the boat" I wanted, but I ran it for a few years, liked it, and eventually sold it.
Every since getting rid of my old johnboat, I have been thinking of getting a new one. Recently at Bass Pro in Pearland, I saw a 1548 MVX Sportsman. There is a lot I like about this little boat, but a few things I really don't like-
Likes -
1-Welded in floor and large front deck - I have seen a few others with this, but not many.
2- Transom float boxes / steps
3- built in flat area on bow for trolling motor, even comes pre-wired.
4- rear deck
5- Rod boxes - not real important, but nice.
6- Welded lug/rings for stake out sticks - I have never seen these on factory boat, really cool add that probably costs the factory almost nothing.
7- Factory mounted seat base, front and rear. Easy to do later, but nice that they are included.
8- Price - $10k for the package. while not as cheap as a plane rivited john with a tiller, seems like a deal for the boat. Plus I can just imagine what someone like Boatrite would want for a little skiff like this...
What I don't like -
A- Tracker Boats reputation for quality. I'd normally put Tracker at the top of my "Do Not Buy" list. That thread about the Mako Pro Skiff makes it sound like they may may be getting better, though...
B- Trailer - Trackers "Galvaguard", quick search on line says it does not hold up to salt water. Really would rather have a true hot-dipped trailer.
C- Motor - for this size motor, I would rather have the E-Tech, in the 25 or 35hp trim.
D- Package sales - if I could get this hull sold "loose", and buy my own trailer and motor, that would be a plus, but, no dice...
So does anyone know of another skiff similar to this one, without going full custom like Boatrite? I was hoping to see something comparable at the boat show, but only one vendor brought small tiller steer aluminum johns. Tracker didn't even have this boat at the show.
Anyone know of something similar?
