West Bay Mayhem

Fished West Bay the Saturday morning from 4:00 am - 9:30 am. Started out fishing a drain and had 2 trout the first two casts throwing a maniac mullet. Finished the day with a couple more and a few lost fish...

That's beyond the point though. Sunday afternoon I headed down to the same spot and fished from 2:00 pm-5:45 pm. I waded all day without getting a single bump. Then it happened....the sun was setting and the water had that look to it. I knew something was about to go down. I pulled a couple trout off a flat by a drain and thought I was going to limit with the last bit of daylight left. I was casting in the wind up current and hooked up with a 12" trout at the beginning of my cast. As I am reeling him in he is on top of the water thrashing when all of the sudden I hear a WHACK! I thought it was a fish busting bait then I realized my 12" trout was limp on top of the water.

My first thought was a shark had gotten him. At this time the trout is 4 feet from me and I can see there are no teeth marks or signs of shark so that threw me for a loop. I am just about to grab him and let him go when the biggest trout I have ever seen comes darting up from below and inhales the trout on my lure. He starts pulling off drag and I am praying that my hook makes it in her mouth lol. I gently start to walk back to shore trying to get this pig in shallower water wear I might have a chance to grab her with the boga. I pulled my phone out to record the action, then I went slack. NOOOOOOO!!!! I was devastated.

I kept my phone recording the 12" trout who now got his second wind and was freaking out. Then it happened again....momma came back to try again. I barely caught the video of her attacking. The video is quick and hard to see her full size.

In the end she let go of my 12" trout and swam off gracefully to find a meal.

She was a trout we all have dreams about catching. She inhaled a 12" trout like it was an assassin. I will be back out there stalking her like a blue heron every chance I get.

Here's the video..
