Looking for advice on roustabout type work for my kid

I've searched a bit but the work climate changes so I figured I would solicit some current input.

My son is 20 and despite numerous threats of death has decided that getting a formal education is for dumbasses. After a Summer of waiting tables with no money saved he's decided that he better do something more lucrative.

Without getting into all the gory details, he's a good kid, very smart, and more than capable of doing whatever he wants to but at this stage of his life he thinks he just wants to work so he can pay for an apartment and live on his own. The idea of an offshore rotation schedule is appealing to him because he only has to show up for work once and there aren't as many distractions with friends, etc. while he's out there.

So what's the story on roustabout type work? Not seeing much posted online and wouldn't really know where to go looking. Are there any companies that will hire someone with zero experience or does he need some sort of certification or classes to even be considered?

I've heard that most of what's going on in the gulf is deep water and you typically need some experience to get those jobs. Any truth to that?
