Louisiana fishing

I will be interning in New Orleans this summer and want to fish a lot while there. I usually fish in Texas and know places here. I have a boat but will not be bringing it because it is really only for fresh water and I don't want to rust everything out going into lake Pontchartrain. I was wondering if anyone has any suggested areas to fish and recommendations or thoughts on getting a kayak. I thought about wade fishing but heard there are gators everywhere and that doesn't sound like my cup of tea. Then again, like I said, I do not know the area. If any one wants a fishing buddy I would go in on gas. I want to be able to take advantage of this great opportunity to fish the Louisiana coast and lakes. Please let me know if you have any tips, suggestions, or if you are interested in fishing together.
