This is the story of a young boy who is the grandson of my 1st cousin. He is the son of Brian Billeck. Brian is the Marketing Director for the Texas Trophy Hunters Association. I have never met this young man but he sounds like a very special young man.
Please say a prayer for his recovery. Here is the story:
DAMON UPDATE -- Our dear Family, Friends, Co-workers, Damon’s teachers & students at Olympia and all who have sent your love & support – Lisa Muto Billeck and I would like to give you the update on Damon.
As you all know by now, Damon... was diagnosed with a rare Osteosarcoma Bone Cancer at the beginning of Feb. It was hard on us and more so on Damon. However, when Damon found out, at some point he heard the song ‘Happy’ from Pharrell. Shortly thereafter, he decided to adopt 'Happy' as his Theme song….his motivator.
The day our Dr. performed the biopsy to identify what type of cancer it was, we were told we had 2 options. We knew then 1 was very much a long shot, but still prayed it would be possible. Looking out for the very best for Damon, we went to Austin this past Monday to see one of the best Orthopedic Oncologist in the country.
During the visit he was direct and told us the only possible outcome in order to save Damon, and this is the hard part to even write now, was to have his left arm amputated. As very tough of a decision it was for us to make, it was and is the right one.
The cancer and tumor has caused too much damage to his Humerus and muscle tissue and it’s the only option we have to save him. As sad as this is or sounds, in the end, we are ‘happy’ because Damon will still be with us. When the Dr. told Damon, he cried with Mom & Dad for awhile. During this, the Dr. started to tell him about prosthetic arms. To lighten the mood, he told Damon some kids even get theirs in color. With a sudden smile on his face, Damon asked if his could be in CAMO. Even at 9 he realized quickly he would rather be here with one arm, then not with two.
When we got to the car we listened to his adopted Theme Song -- ‘Happy.’ After several plays he was smiling…even joking. Lisa and I began telling him he would still be able to do everything he wants, even with one arm. At one point Lisa said he could still play sports, bowling..soccer, etc. Damon said “well, not everything in soccer…I’d suck as a goalie!” ha ha
When we got home he wanted to tell his twin sister Dara first on his own. He was matter of fact and didn't even shed a tear doing it. He then told his brothers Stephen & Brandon. It was the hardest time of our life!! But, thru it all…Damon still listens to ‘Happy’ and keeps smiling. You would never know anything was wrong. We believe he has a flock of Angels around him giving him strength beyond his years. We have no idea how he does it, but we know all the support and prayers all of you have given us, and more importantly Damon, gives him the courage and happiness he needs to keep going!
This past Friday the nationally syndicated Kidd Kraddick show interviewed Pharrell about his new album and the Oscars. During the interview Pharrell talked about Damon. Lisa and I were shocked and touched. Please listen: http://ift.tt/1eWOyJz
We want to say God Bless you all and God Bless you Pharrell…you helped more than you could possibly know!! Good Luck tonight!
Damon is currently in the hospital for his Chemo treatment, but we are going to have an Oscars watch party. And Pharrell Williams...Damon is rooting for you to win!
To each and every one of you, without all of your support and prayers our family has no idea how we would get through this!
Many have asked how to help us, so here is how:
