Broke the Surfside jetties around 7:15 a.m., made a beeline to Tequila. Had a throttle cable issue on the starboard side and could only make 4,300 rpm which significantly limited out speed. Seas were awesome though. Tried everything i had read...drifted the up-current side, drifted around the rig, used squid, ice fish, deep, mid-depth, etc. Lost 3 lines...honestly could not tell if we were hooked up on fish or the rig. Did feel line tug and line being pulled off of the reel but it could have been the result of us being hung up and our drift pulling against it that was peeling off the line. Will never know.
Did get one positive fish...hit hard and ran. We chased it along the side of the rig and got to the up-rig side where it stopped and locked down. Nothing we could do to budge it. Again, don't know if we were not using big enough equipment (Avet LX 6.0's) or whether it had wrapped us around something but it couldn't be budged, finally broke off. Pretty frustrating but that's fishing I guess.
Decided we were a bit out of our element, went to Campeche and couldn't even paint many fish at our usual spots. Finally saw a few on sonar dropped to lines down to instant hookups on, you got it, snapper. Hit several more rocks with the same results so ran to Salvador. Same thing. Headed back in, seas were small but confused so it was a bit bumpy. Nothing to show for the day but sore bodies and more great memories.
