I'm looking to make a change this summer in my choice of firearm for deer hunting. I currently shoot a 30.06 with a 150 gr ammo and I've come to the realization that its just too much for deer hunting.
I hunt in the Llano area and my shots are generally from as close as 50 yards to about 225 yards (although I generally pass on these). This is a low fence 1000 acre place, so the deer aren't extremely large either.
I've also got a 6 year old son who wants to spend more and more time in the deer stand with me and this year I'm hoping he builds up the courage to take his own deer and the 30.06 is just too much for him. He'll be almost 7 by the time season rolls around.
A couple of other guys on the lease hunt with 22/250 and a 243, both of which I'm looking into.
Any suggestions on something that is effective, yet something my son can handle?
