I received a letter from the state of Texas last evening stating that I had not had my boat trailer inspected prior to registration which is due in April. I was not aware that my trailer had to be inspected until I went to have it done and found out that since it has a rating greater than 4500lbs. it would need to be inspected but that it would not pass since it did not have brakes. I bought this boat in 2010 and have never had this problem until now. Was told that the new vehicle inspection allows for the state now enforce a law that has been on the books for years.
My current registration has it rated at 5100 lbs. The boat/motor weigh 2400 lbs. and the trailer weighs 1100 lbs.
How do I get the GVWR reduced on the registration to under 4500 lbs.? The only other solution that was suggested by the inspection station was to retrofit the trailer with brakes. This does not seem like a reasonable solution because I use the trailer exclusively in Saltwater and I have been down that path before leading me to the conclusion that saltwater and trailer brakes don't seem to like each other.
I am sure that I can't be the only one with this problem and I am sure there will be others to follow.
Just looking for a solution to a frustrating problem.
Thanks for your help.
