Boatless in May!!

I'm taking my boat in for repower (f300s!) early this Sat and likely to be without it for most of May. So, if anyone is heading out for an overnighter, I may be available to crew. Should be available on Sat-Sundays (maybe a Fri afternoon - Sat trip) for the following weekends: May 3-4, 24-26, and 31-Jun 1. Give me a PM if a weather window opens up and you need someone to complete crew. Thanks for keeping me in mind.

new vs used boat

been looking for a boat and leaning on a 23ft Shoalwater bay cat. new there 65k and used is not much cheaper. Also been looking at shallow sports and really any shallow water boat for the fishing I like to do. Any advice would help out a lot. due to the fact this would be my first boat I would be buying for fishing instead of my normal duck boat I take everywhere.

Help with elite 7?

I just put an elite 7 on my boat and I have 2 issues I can't figure out even after reading the manual.

1) when navigating to a waypoint, how can I set the information screen to show how far I am from the waypoint? I'm able to set the curser over the waypoint, and it will tell me how far I am from the curser, but that's rather cumbersome.

2) is there a way to show all the waypoints on the map screen? It seems to only want to show ones that I manually select "show"

Florida Charter?

Hey 2coolers,

My family and i will be heading to Hutchinson Island, FL (east coast) in June, and i am wanting to get some off shore fishing in. It will only be my Father-in law and i going out to fish. We don't care what kind of fish we get into of course a bill fish would be nice we are game for anything.

Do any of yall have any experience with any charters in the part of the country? Not fans of the big party boats. I know the "private charters" cost a lot more, but not looking to break the bank either. Thanks in advance.

Bought a new motorguide today

After my last trip out fighting with my **** anchor i was really thinking hard about the anchor function on the new trolling motors. I looked at the minn kota & motorguides. Both seem like well made equipment. Ive ran a motorguide on my bass boat for 8 years and it was used when i got it with not one problem. The fact that minn kotas only links to humminbirds and i have two lowrance was another check fot M.G. The jog function seems like a really good idea. Will it be in reall world? I dont know. I went to bass pro today and looked at both and the fact that only the M.G. came in a 80# thrust and 60" length was another check. I liked the remote lay out a bit better on the M.G than the M.K. So to end this iwill just say i did all the research i could and picked the motor guide xi5 with the pinpoint and hope it will do me justice. I will be sure to post a full review down the road for others.

ISO Tandem Axle Trailer

Looking for a cheap tandem axle trailer with key word being "CHEAP" - around $400.00. This will be used to haul water around the deer lease so I don't care if the fenders are missing, floor is rotted or whatever as long as the frame is straight. Once it is pulled to Mason it will most likely spend the rest of its life there.

Mig Welding thread

Well guys the welder thread from the other day has finally pushed me over the edge and we are gonna get a new mig welder for playing with. We always had a "cracker box" welder when I was growing up but have never had one of my own at my house.

After a bit of reading and thinking I have decided to get the Millermatic 180. It's the smallest 240 volt they make and will do just fine for what we will be doing with it, or should I say the boys. I ain't touchin the dang thing!

Best I can find on the net is $1180 with the cart and a nice Miller helmet. It comes with a few other things but we will still need to get a bottle. Haven't really checked in to the bottle thing but I think we just gonna buy that with a new cert. and fill it at the local gas place in R town.

Now I just gotta make sure they have plenty fire extinguishers out there so they don't burn my barn down.

Refurb my livewells

I've got some rust stains in the interior of my livewells. I take it whoever owned the boat previously used it to store rusty stuff instead of bait!

I'm assuming the livewell walls are finished in gelcoat. I've sanded on them a bit to remove some of the rust spots. Once I did that I thought I'd better do something to reseal that surface.

I've got a small kit of white brushable gelcoat and hardener that I ordered but didn't need to use as planned. I've also got some leftover Evercoat gel coat color/tint in blue.

I'm wondering if I should prep/clean the livewell walls and apply a couple coats of gelcoat tinted a light blue? Doable?

State Water out of Freeport this coming Friday

I'm still exploring the State areas out of Freeport, and just got Rik Jacobsen's State book. Looking for someone to buddy boat Friday morning looking for snapper, or maybe going a little further out before trying for snapper.

No triggerfish in FEDERAL waters after May 1st?

So, just to clarify, is this like the "no red snapper in Federal waters, but you can still catch them in State waters" rule? It would be a monster of a trigger to be legal, but since the water's looking so good this coming Friday, I thought I'd get clarification just in case I catch fish-Zilla over a State reef.

Storing Blue crab

i have a few crab traps from glen on here and go crabbing when im at the house with nothing to do. i have always just eaten them that day or cleaned and froze them submerged in water for long term storage. My question is how do you store them for like say a week? Do i have to clean and freeze or can i freeze them whole in the outside chest freezer? I would like to get a few dozen from the traps for a small boil with a few friends.

I've got a 1996 Evinrude and the water coming out of the pisser seems very hot( like piping hot shower). Is this too hot? Doesn't seem right to me. What should the water temp be?

Lake Lavon Guided Crappie Fishing Report DFW

Lake Lavon Report: been super busy and to tired to post anywhere. So here goes the Lavon Report for the last 3-4 weeks. The wind has been absolutely terrible. When it's not to windy, under 12 mph, limits of the tasty fish r being taken. And to add to that, the crappie have grown enormous. 15-16 inchers are actually very common. We came .08 ounces from beating the lake record last week. One shad away, lol. I'm sure this year the record or a couple of them have been eaten. There is still a couple weeks left to catch a female full of eggs that weighs 3 lbs. I know she is out there ......

Gear: 10 ft & 12 ft Bass Pro Shops CrappieMax rods and Pro Angler rods.

Spinning reels with 8 lb mono

Jigs: Black Chart / White Chart - Thump Buddy's by lightsouttackle.com

Using hand poured 1/32 & 1/16 th oz pink jig heads

Fishing Areas: Rip Rap ( rocks ), standing timber, brush piles, submerged boat ramps, sandy coves or along the sandy beaches.

Rip Rap: vertical fish 1-5 ft of water up in the rocks and fish slow covering every nook and cranny. Make sure your jig is off the bottom about 6 inches or so. Also jig and bobber on 4 lb line is deadly and u can cover lots of water a lot faster. Small twitches is all that's needed and sometimes just casting and letting it sit, will entice a strike. I start with the bobber 6 inches deep and cover the rocks in 1 ft of water. Then I make the bobber 1.5 deep. I keep making it deeper till I hit 5 ft. Then I move to the next spot 40 yards down the rocks. Some days you won't have to move and you can limit out your 25 crappie per day.

Standing Timber: work your jig 1/2 foot off the bottom next to the standing timber and hold it still as possible. Work the entire water column on the piece of timber your working. Sometimes they will be a ft down in 15 ft of water hugging the timber waiting for the shad to come by. The shad are spawning everywhere in the mornings so the crappie are 1-2 ft till 7:30-8 am. As the sun comes up, the fish that are not spawning, move out to deeper water. I try to start the foot down on the standing timber, before I send the gym to the bottom. So try to work the upper water column first before you start yanking fish from the bottom through the school that's higher up.

Brush Piles: find brush piles in any depth right now and there should be a fish in it. I have been focused on 5-15 ft of water while targeting fish in the brush piles. Somedays they are hanging out around the piles and sometimes they r deep inside of them. Make sure you have a lot of jigs on board. If your not getting snagged, your not crappie fishing.

I fish the top part of the piles and then move to the outsides of the pile before dropping directly into the pile.

Submerged Boat Ramps: Lake Lavon is dotted with submerged boat ramps. When you find them, I like to fish them with the jigging bobber, no bobber just a Jig, and then I will vertical fish it. Crappie and bass are spawning on the merged boat ramps right now. Only way you can really find them is with side imaging. After you find them figure out where the end of the boat ramp is and start from there. You want to work your way up towards the beach.

Sandy Coves & Beaches: The sand is hard enough surface for the Crappie to fan out of bed and lay their eggs. Best way to approach these: is a jig bobber covering water from 1 foot 4 foot. Cast to the beach and work your jig and bobber back to the boat. I prefer to use 4 pound line with a 7 foot rod with the spinning reel. Medium action on the rod. Remember you have to adjust the depth a lot till you find out if they are in a pattern or not.

Tire Reef: Fish live minnows or checks going to six-foot down. They will actually spawn inside the tire so always start out 3 inches deep. Then go deeper as the day gets brighter. They will spawn on the sides of the tires and on the cables that old tires together. You're just looking for hard surfaces during the spawn. I can't Spohn in silt otherwise the eggs won't hatch and they know that.

Live minnows are obviously golden. But if you can throw a net, a 2-3 inch live thread in shad or same sized gizzard shad, with smash the crappie. They can not resist a live shad if they are near it. Minnows on a size 6 bait hook with a small split shot to keep them now at the depth you want it to stay. I use pegged bobbers. When pegging them in, tap it. Don't mash it in there or you kink the line.

If you look at your line and see a kink or fray, cut it off and re tie. The next fish could be the big one and when u go to sling it in the boat, your line snaps and you instantly say a curse word as you see your fish slip back into the drink.

Fruits of Labor - Nice Bobcat

A buddy and I headed down to the ranch this past weekend with nothing other than work planned. We were doing some maintenance on feeders Saturday morning and rolled up on a small covey of quail. While we were stopped watching them I happened to catch a little bit of movement behind some brush. I had my AR out in case we rolled across any pigs and quickly realized what I saw was a bobcat. We have tons of cats on this place. I could tell it was a decent size cat so I went ahead and took him. Glad I did. It's a good size, male cat with great color. Work weekend turned into a trip to the taxi! He should make a neat mount.

Bamboo live bait/outrigger poles

I have bamboo poles that make awesome live bait ( sabaki rig) or outrigger poles. I grow and cure them my self and I have them from 1 1/15" in diameter up to 28' feet in length. The great thing about these poles is that you can use them to catch your live bait on the way out and then use them for outriggers for trolling. For the smaller boats they can be used for multiple things and are very lite and biodegradable, which means you don't have them in your way back if you don't want. I'm pretty sure some type of sea life or tired old sea bird would appreciate the temporary earth/userfriendly structure. After I cure them the really look pretty cool so If your interested give me a call at 409-443-9997 Thank You Ronnie :bluefish:

LL State Park Ramp Warning

I wanted to post this up to help my fellow 2 coolers out.

If you are launching at the ramps that are close to the State Park Store I would advise you to not use the one on the right side. This is the ramp closet to the store/pier. The concrete has a severe crack in it and if you have a low clearance truck/suv you will more than likely high center your vehicle on its frame. On top of that it is very slick.

I put the boat in the water and had to undo the winch strap. I set my emergency brake and my truck proceeded to slide into the lake!:oh: Note the boat was floating and off of my trailer.

Thank god I have a 4x4! Or else I might not have been able to get off of that ramp.

Calais 200dc main gear corrosion

Question for Dan, George, Dipsay, MattK and others that are in the know.

I had 4 of these reels brought in by a customer, that had been submerged for a period of time. All of them had the main gear corroded, due to the effect of anodic reaction by water on brass and aluminum. Replaced the gear pairs, and they are as good as new.

Of concern, however, is that another customer that has the same reel that has never been under water, experienced the same catastrophic failure of the main gear too.I was able to source a new main and pinion gear for him, and the reel is as it was meant to be.

As a landlocked country, we only use the reels in fresh water, so salt does not come into the equation.

My personal Calais 200DC has been in use for a number of years and shows no signs of any corrosion.Neither do any of the other dozens of these models I have worked on.

Have any of you seen this before ? Could there be an electrical interaction taking place from the dynamo powered digital circuitry ?

Thanks guys.

Terry.

Surfside 4-26

Fished the jetties with some friends this morning from 7:30 until noon. No live shrimp available anywhere so we used dead shrimp under a popping cork. Had to use about an 8' leader with a split shot about 2' from the hook as they wouldn't hit anything shorter. Bite picked up around mid morning and we caught a few undersized smacks and a bunch of smaller fish (grunts???). Water clarity was great the entire length of the jetty... Even saw 3 pompano landed but couldn't get any ourselves.

Amazing service at Acies Marine

So got a new to me offshore boat that's been sitting up for 8 years. Put new rims and tires on it and towed it to Acies marine in San Leon. Said he was about a week behind and he would have boat done in 10ish days. This was last Tuesday. Got a call this morning said my boat was done and ready and also came in under budget. He got my boat done 3.5 days and it runs like a champ. I couldn't be happier with the service I received from top notch mechanics. Anyone need evinrude, Yamaha or Johnson's serviced I recommend taking it there.

Blue wave VS nautic star boats

I greatly appreciate all the help and information about the blue wave boats. I am now looking at 2 different boats just to try to keep from canceling out any other options. I was looking at a local dealer and noticed the nautic star 244xts and 2400 sport after also being told to look at them as they might also fit my needs.

How does the nautic star handle rough conditions? Is the warranty truly as good as advertised? Any issues with the company not wanting to warranty faulty materials and workmanship?

Overall which is the best between these boats all around I will be fishing for stripers and catfish.

Transducer questions

The standard external mounted transducer broke on my boat and I need to replace (lowrance HDS Gen 1).... just trying to figure out which way to go. I think I want a shoot through, but reading through the FAQ's on lowrance's site indicates that they won't work well on "sandwich" style constructions, and that it must be solid fiberglass. the pad is probably one of the thickest parts of the boat, so I am curious how well it would work there through multiple layers

I want to put it on the pad of the boat because it's #1 easy access to get to, and #2 a good flat spot. If not there, I'm curious where folks are mounting this type of transducer?

Maybe someone will say that transducers aren't available anymore for gen 1 units and I'll have to upgrade to the new touch screen systems....

Thanks 2Cool!

I wanted to take a bit of time to thank all that helped gather information on my stolen boat for me and with me as it was quite valuable. I won't mention a bunch of names but you know who you are that assisted with Craig's list, court docs and reverse tracking of phone numbers and gave me info I could pass along to the authorities as well an actual sighting of the rig soon after it was stolen.

The jack plate from Craig's list has been recovered as well as my boat from Chambers County. Much is still missing such as the motor so this is still an ongoing open investigation with a major piece of equipment considered stolen that may or may not be recovered.

Thanks 2Coolfishing. I asked for help and you responded.

Running Outboard through Weeds Offshore

This past week on our way out weeds were everywhere. Did what we could to avoid running straight threw them much to no avail. One of the two outboards quit peeing.. Don't know much but know this was bad. The only thing I could think of was hooking the wash down hose up and try to flush it. Thank The Lord above because this worked and water pump was spitting water well. On the way home the same situation happened 3 more times, once on the opposite outboard. All shortly after hitting a patches of weed. At one point in time the boat seemed to power down a little. Motor didn't seem to get hot ever. QUESTIONS: Is this common? Could any damage have been done? (Everything appears to be operating well after last flush)

Sonar transducer shot-through-hull mounting

Looking to move a transducer that is currently on the transom and place it on the hull for a shot-through hull mount. Guy at Bass Pro told me I could do this myself. Any words from the wise? Anyone have a link to help guide me.. any tips or problems that I might run across?

Katy kid catching fish in the sewer no joke

http://ift.tt/1fdmmt0

I once caught 2 big oscars (pet fish) behind wilderness trails in friendswood in a sewer drain I'm guessing someone didn't want and let go in there. I grew up on oak hollow and we used to ride bikes behind what we called the new pool ( they closed the front pool that was next to the high school) it's a big retainage pond and in the middle on the side the houses line there is a sewer pipe that comes out and had a small area that held water and it used to be deeper before they cleared the pond a number of years back.. But i was like 7 or 8 and I had a bucked and took them back to my friends dad who told me what they were.. I thought I was so cool ha. I still remember what I caught them on, a crawfish crappy jig. Anyway anyone else has a cool story like that. Brings back good memory's.

Scopequest

I am looking for a scope, variable power, lets say 3 x 9 x 40 with a Post Dot or Post Triangle reticle like Trijicon offers. Illuminated would be great but not a deal killer. Tube diameter can be one inch or thirty millimeter. I have looked pretty hard and haven't seen anything, other than Trijicon, at eight hundred bucks and some change. I want a simple optic with this particular look. It will be going on a bolt rifle for fast target acquisition, but I need some magnification. Plenty of mil dot's and cross hairs out there, I just want something different. Any help?

Gibbons Creek 4/25

Today I had Greg of Houston fishing with his son Travis, about to graduate from Texas A&M, out for a father son morning on the water. Greg is with Transcendent Global Networks, and writes for Texas Fish and Game Magazine. They were a fun bunch on the water.

We fished Gibbons Creek. The winds were lite out of the ENE to start with. We were able to find the fish in 2-4 foot water fairly quick.

They ended the morning at 10:45, with 50 cats in the cooler.

All fish caught on corks, using CJ's Crawdad punch bait.

Looking for a Viszla for Stud Service

Does anyone have a Viszla that they would be willing to Stud? I am helping a coworker look for a Viszla to breed with her Viszla. They are such beautiful dogs. Please let me know if you can help. Thanks.

Dog needs a new home

Addie is a 16mo mix. UTD on everything, spayed and house broke. She is about 50# and loves to play. She won't leave our calves alone and will not stop chasing them.

So we have decided to put her up for adoption to a good home
